John grew up in Geneseo, New York, where he developed a love for sports, including basketball and pole vaulting. As a young man, he also worked as a short-order cook at his father’s restaurant.
He graduated from SUNY Oneonta, where he earned his master’s degree. John proudly served in the United States Army and went on to build a distinguished career as an economist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, receiving multiple awards in recognition of his work.
John found joy in life’s simple pleasures—researching genealogy, sharing breakfasts with friends at Hy-Vee, gardening, taking walks, and spending time at the beach in Charleston, South Carolina. Though naturally quiet, he had a playful sense of humor and was known to be a jokester among those who knew him well. Above all, he cherished his role as “Papa” and deeply loved his grandchildren. He took great pride in his Catholic faith, was dedicated to hard work, and placed family at the center of his life.
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Paula; his children, Elizabeth and Drew Weathers, John and Alex Carr, and Bobby and Shannon Carr; his sisters, Sue (Dick) Conant and Kathy Carr; and his cherished grandchildren, Josie, Sophia, and Vivianna Weathers; Eli and Hope Carr; and Gavin and Addie Carr.
Services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741) or to Dementia Friendly Iowa at dementiafriendlyiowa.org.
