

John W. Hanssen, 88, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away at the Davenport Good Samaritan Society, on Friday, February 13, 2015. Funeral services will be held at the Runge Mortuary, Davenport, on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. The visitation will be held from noon until service time. John Hanssen was born September 25, 1926, in Burlington, Iowa, to William and Stella (Strauss) Hanssen. He married Tamara Lee Albrecht. She preceded him in death. John later married Lois A. Swanson, on June 9, 1984. She also preceded him in death. He served in the United States Army from 1945 through 1946 when he was honorably discharged. He then played minor league baseball for the Selma Cubs, a farm team affiliated with the Chicago Cubs. Mr. Hanssen was a union carpenter for most of his career until starting his own business, Hanssen and Sons Construction, which he operated until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed all sports, traveling, playing cards, and fishing. In his later years, his passions were watching the Chicago Cubs on TV, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Michael and B.J. Hanssen, of Massachusetts, Michelle and Juan Martinezjunco, of Las Vegas, and Matthew and Vickie Hanssen, of Blue Grass, Iowa; stepchildren and their spouses, Connie Argotsinger, and Bruce and Liz Swanson, all of Missouri, Cindy Swanson, Brett Swanson, and Cheri and Richard Marten, all of Florida, Bradley Swanson, Cathy and Denny Reeves, Carol and Richard Kirby, and Christie and Kevin Kahl, all of Iowa; as well as 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and one niece, Ruth Ann Kelley, of Iowa. Mr. Hanssen was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Ruth and Doretta, and by a son, Mark W. Hanssen.
