Memorial graveside services for John R. Skinner, 87, of Davenport, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should meet by 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Davenport. There will be a time of fellowship and lunch with the family back at the church immediately following the graveside services. Mr. Skinner died on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.John Riley Skinner was born on Tuesday, April 7, 1925 in Adair, IA, the son of John and Dora (Murphy) Skinner. He served in the United States Marine Corp in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII and also in Korea during the Korean Conflict. While enlisted, he was held as a prisoner of war in Japan and prior to his discharge, had been awarded 3 Purple Hearts. Upon completion of his military obligations, he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Political Science. On March 2, 1953, he married the love of his life, Maye H. Tichota in O’Neill, NE. She preceded him in death in March of 2007.Mr. Skinner was employed for 28 years as a millwright at the Riverdale, ALCOA Works retiring in 1987. He was a former member of Local # 105 and also the Millwrights Local # 305. He was a long time member of the Marine Corp League.Surviving members of the family include his Daughter: Kassandra (Randy) Pobanz of Davenport, and a Son: Wayne Skinner of Bettendorf, along with 3 Grandchildren and 5 Great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Kenneth, a sister Wanda, and 4 brothers: Charles, Harold, Frank, and Wayne.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
