Born September 1, 1951, in Clinton, Iowa, Joe was a 1969 graduate of Clinton High School, where he lettered in several sports. He entered the apprenticeship for Local 25, Plumbers and Pipefitters, following his father, his uncles, and others in the family who took up the same trade, and as a journeyman became a recognized expert welder. His career took him around the world as a construction superintendent, and everywhere he went he made friendships. None were so important as the ones he kept from high school. He was proud of the work and proud of the union that gave it dignity. His later years were spent quietly at home in Davenport.
He was political and progressive, sharp-minded and tough, a devoted Cubs and Bears fan, a lover of books and movies, and a man who could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved a good debate and a good story as much as a good meal. He cooked, he served drinks, he laughed, and he held court. He was the kind of man a room organized itself around. He was a great teller of stories, and he hoped one day to see his own life written into a book.
Above all he was a father. He is survived by his six children (in birth order) — Joe Long III, Shelley Long, Steve Long, Amanda Long, Nicole Long, and Nathan Long — along with several beloved grandchildren and a great-grandchild, as well as a wide family rooted in generations of the building trades, across many states and countries.
He traveled far and built much. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eagle Lodge at Eagle Point Park, Clinton, Iowa.
