Julie A. (McGrath) Bruns, 46, of Blue Grass, IA passed away Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, IA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Blue Grass, IA. Julie was born May 1, 1967 in Dubuque, IA; the daughter of James and Ruth (Mettille) McGrath. She began her law enforcement career in 1998 as a jailor for Tama County Iowa Sheriff’s Department. She graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on June 28, 2002. She was a police officer for one year with the Keokuk Iowa Police Department. Julie then went to the Department of Safety for the University of Northern Iowa and was then hired by the Davenport Police Department in December 2003. She was forced to retire due to her illness in 2010. She was united in marriage to Scott Bruns on March 6, 2004 in Des Moines, IA. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Blue Grass. She enjoyed spending time with her children and was very interested in their education, music and sports and attended all their activities. She loved to travel and spend time with her family. Julie’s faith was very important to her.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Scott; daughter Taylor Jo and son Travis, both of Blue Grass; stepchildren: Jessica (Gregg) Raney, Woodbridge, VA and Derek (Nicole) Bruns, Traer, IA; two grandsons, Carter and Owen; her parents, Ruth and James McGrath, Davenport; sisters, Donna (Gary) Urwiler, Mooseheart, IL; Lynn (Dave) Schooler, Eldridge, IA and Sandy (Rick) Hoerner, Dubuque, IA and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bernadine McGrath and Dorothy and Carl Mettille; brother, Kevin and a sister, Robin.
