June was born April 16, 1927 in Rock Island, Illinois, the daughter of Grace Weber O’Melia and Cecil O’Melia. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1945 and later attended business classes before working for Murphy and Murphy Law Firm as a legal secretary.
June married Roy George Schindler in 1953. June and Roy owned and operated Schindler Construction Company, and in later years RKR & Associates. They were blessed with five children, Rudy, Tina, Marilyn, Susan and Kurt. June was also blessed with five grandchildren, Austin, Courtney, Anna, Marissa and Roy. Just days before her passing, she became a great grandma to beautiful little Penn while also awaiting the birth of her second great grandchild, baby Stinauer. She had many nieces and nephews, and also great nieces and great nephews, all that she held very dear to her heart and who were an important part of her daily life.
June and Roy filled their years together with enjoying their family. Roy turned several buses into motorhomes for the family to travel across the United States every summer, visiting family and friends, as well as national parks and museums. June’s mom Grace often traveled with them. June and Roy enjoyed dinners out on Saturday nights, visiting brothers Jim and Cecil at their restaurants O’Melia’s Supper Club and in earlier years The Office Supper Club. Cruising the Mississippi was a favorite summer pastime. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Circle of Love ladies guild, Beta Sigma Phi Women’s Business Sorority, Lindsay Park Yacht Club, and her Card Club. She was a beautiful artist and loved to sew, making most of her children’s clothing when they were young. June was a loving devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and neighbor to everyone who crossed her path. Always with a listening ear, always there when you needed her… always knew just how to make you feel everything would be okay.
Those left to honor her include; children: Rudy Schindler (SuzAnne), Tina Schindler, Marilyn Meyer (Greg), Susan Yontz (Brian), Kurt Schindler (Shana); grandchildren: Austin Laugen (Heather), Courtney Schindler, Anna Stinauer (John), Marissa Trafton (Adam), Roy Schindler; great-grandsons Penn Trafton and Baby Stinauer; nieces and nephews: Leslie O’Melia (Barbara), Laurie, Michael O’Melia (Jane), Terry O’Melia (Trudy), Linda O’Melia, Daniel O’Melia (Larry), Randy O’Melia (Grace), Kerry O’Melia and John O’Melia (Laura); Roy’s nieces and nephews: Walter Schindler, Ruth Ann Walters (Dennis) John Brusen, Christa Brusen Gomez, Carolyn Brinkley (Richard), Karl Brusen (Julie), Peter Brusen (Lisa).
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers John, James and Cecil, and nephews James O’Melia and Larry O’Melia.
A special thank you from the family to Linda O’Melia, Ruth Ann Walters, and Kim Hatfield for the loving care they provided to June.
