At the age of six, Leroy accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Stockton Baptist Church, where he was later baptized—a decision that would anchor his life. He began his education in a two-room schoolhouse in Stockton, where he met his lifelong friend, Neil Burmeister. Leroy developed a passion for music and excelled as a trumpet player, inspired and encouraged by his beloved high school band director, Marvin Krause.
Leroy shared a close bond with his family, especially his grandparents. After the loss of his mother and grandfather, his father married Lois Frutiger. Leroy later moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where he helped his father build their home and spent time traveling across the country.
He worked at a local airport while considering his future and went on to graduate summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a degree in Industrial Arts Education . Though he briefly taught shop class, Leroy eventually pursued a career as a machinist—a decision that brought him back to the green fields and familiar roots of Iowa.
In January 1983, Leroy began working at the Rock Island Arsenal as a machinist, a job he loved and proudly held for 37 years. That same year, he met Lynn, the woman who would become his wife, in a providential encounter at their apartment mailbox. Their friendship grew into love, and they married on June 25, 1988.
Leroy and Lynn built a life together in Davenport and raised three children—Daniel, John, and Claire. He was a devoted father and husband, faithfully present in every season of his children’s lives—from school field trips and church events to Special Olympics competitions and simple afternoons in the yard.
Leroy delighted in family traditions like visiting the Iowa State Fair and celebrating the holidays together, and cherished time spent biking, playing catch, doing yard work and running errands. He had a deep appreciation for the beauty of Iowa and the small joys of daily life.
Even after being diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2016, Leroy remained engaged with his family, witnessing Daniel’s graduation and wedding to his wife, Jess, and celebrating John and Claire’s high school graduations. At the time of his passing, he was joyfully awaiting the birth of his first grandchild in August.
Leroy will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering faith, gentle humor, and steadfast love. He leaves behind a legacy of humility, kindness, and integrity.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn; children, Daniel (Jess), John, and Claire; and a granddaughter expected in August. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Alice Bloom; and grandparents, Chris and Laura Anderson, and Olga and William Bloom. The visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, June 27. The Funeral service will be at 11 am on Saturday, June 28. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Northside Baptist Church.
