

Lloyd L. Welp, 92, of Davenport passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 10 am in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 pm at the mortuary. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church. He was born February 16, 1920 in Kamrar, Iowa a son of Eppo and Bertha (Mechaelson) Welp. On December 6, 1942 he married Lora Blackburn. She preceded him in death on December 10, 1990. He later married Evonne Fisher on January 12, 1995.
Mr. Welp was an Army veteran of World War II having served from 1940-1945 in the European Theatre of Operations. Later he was employed for United Airlines, having completed and achieving Journeyman rating as an instrument repairman in San Francisco. Later, he was employed with Bendix Aviation, repairing automatic pilot instruments for military as well as commercial aviation. He provided design ideas and/or maintenance on new aircraft instrumentation under development such as the “Spruce Goose” for Howard Hughes, the B58 first flight for Convair, point sensors for cryogenic fuel systems in Saturn rockets in Apollo missions used to put man on the moon and design ideas for the gravity indicator to permit a pilot to fly back to Earth in the Lunar module. He retired in 1988 as a Maintainability and Logistics Engineer for Bendix-Litton.
His memberships included St. John’s United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for 45 years and taught Sunday School, the Full Gospel Businessmen and Davenport America Legion. He was a past Scout Master in the Boy Scouts of America, a certified Master Gardener and enjoyed reading, electronic hobbies, and singing with the Golden Tones at CASI.
Survivors include his loving wife of 17 years, Evonne; sons Larry Welp of Des Moines and David Welp of Davenport, grandchildren Aubrey, Maura, Zach, and their mother, Polly; and a sister Jean Daniell of Branson, Missouri.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy, his parents, and six siblings.
