Lucy was born on December 7, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa, to Lucille and John Hass. She grew up in nearby Riverdale in a close-knit family with two sisters and two brothers. She married Richard Mooney and graduated from Bettendorf High School in 1959. She welcomed four daughters into the world. They were the center of her world, and her resilience and hard work allowed them to grow into strong women themselves. Her dedication and love live on in an extended family whose devotion to one another is her legacy.
To support her family, Lucy worked for 50 years in retail and as a typesetter for her sister’s printing business in Geneseo, Illinois. Her coworkers remember her as hardworking, kind, and a good friend.
Family and friends meant everything to Lucy, and she treasured her time with them. She especially cherished trips with her mother and sister to visit family across the country. She loved to read, and she had a natural green thumb, often spending her free time outdoors tending her yard and the plants she enjoyed caring for.
Sunday dinners were very special to her. A wonderful cook, she delighted in making her children’s and grandchildren’s favorite meals and treats, many of them traditional family recipes that have been passed down and now bring back fond memories of her. She put her heart into planning family celebrations and holidays. Christmas was her favorite, and she took great joy in making the season magical for her daughters and grandchildren, creating traditions and memories her loved ones still hold dear. Her home was a place of warmth, generosity, and togetherness, a spirit her family carries on today.
Lucy showed her love in countless ways: thoughtful little gifts, everyday acts of support, and simply being there. The traditions she created and the love she gave so freely live on in the family she cared for so deeply.
Lucy is survived by her four daughters, Debra (Jodie) Gordon, Sheila Mooney, Sherri Mooney-Pauli, and Connie Mooney; her grandchildren, Clarissa (Tyler) Rahmatulla, Allison Gordon, and Alex Gordon; her three great-grandchildren, Carter, Koa, and Maddon; and her brother, Donald Prewein, Connie’s goddaughter Zyyanna.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille, and John Hass; her sisters, Mary Ann DeDecker, and Delores Wells; and her brother, John Hass.
A memorial service celebrating Lucy’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, in the Runge Mortuary and Crematory Chapel on East Kimberly Road in Davenport, Iowa. A dinner will follow immediately afterward at Biaggi’s Italian Restaurant, 5195 Utica Ridge Road, Davenport, Iowa. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the life of a woman who meant so much to so many.
