Margaret L. Mitchell

August 24, 1944 – March 19, 2026

Margaret Lynn Mitchell passed away on March 19, 2026, at the age of 81, surrounded by family. She was born on August 24, 1944, to George and Mildred Hicks, in Iowa City, Iowa. She was united in marriage October 22, 1967 to Merritt Keith Mitchell, who preceded her in death in 2006.

Margaret was lovingly known as “Marge” or “Margie” throughout her life, and “Grandma Margie” to the children she advocated for and the children in her beloved church community.

Margie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Her deep love for Jesus was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her words, actions, and purpose. The faith she held so dearly inspired everything she did, especially her commitment to serving others. Through her many acts of volunteerism, she lived out the truth of Scripture: “I will show you my faith by my works.”

After her retirement from an accounting and bookkeeping career, Margie was a dedicated volunteer, devoting 17 years of service to the CASA program, as well as years to organizations including the Citizen Foster Care Review Board and RSVP. Her commitment to serving others was recognized when she was honored as a recipient of the Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award in 2012 and the Community Partnerships for Protecting Children Volunteer of the Year award in 2018. She was deeply involved in her church community, Adventure Christian Community, which was a source of great joy and support for her.

She is survived by her children: Denice Mitchell; James “Jim” Mitchell (Amy); and Sharon “Sherry” Mitchell.

She was a proud grandmother to Jayme Anderson (Jon), Nicholaus “Nick” Mitchell, Chaz (Samantha) Schrupp, Noah (Sarah Sheahan) Mitchell, Katie (Dave) Rumppe, Dylan (Alysha) Mitchell, Korbin (Erica Moeller) Denton, and Calli Stuart. She was blessed with beloved great-grandchildren: Graysen and Lucas Anderson; Deklan and Lakken Schrupp; Rival Mitchell; Isla and Maverick Mitchell; and Kinlee Denton.

She is also survived by her siblings: Elizabeth “Betty” Hatcher, Helen Hicks, Thomas “Tommy” Hicks, Josephine “Josie” Hicks, William “Billy” Hicks, and Kelly Hicks.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Mitchell; her son, Vincent Mitchell; her daughter-in-law, Donna Durbin Mitchell; her granddaughters, Kourtni and Susie Mitchell; her siblings George Hicks, Marcia “Susie” Hicks, and Frances Walker; and her parents, George and Mildred Hicks.

Margie will be remembered for her strength, her kindness, and the deep love she had for her family and community. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, March 24 at 6:00 p.m. at Adventure Christian Community Church, 6509 NW Blvd, Davenport.
