Davenport and Saturday from 9:30 a.m until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be directed to St. John's United Methodist Church Foundation or Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Hank was born July 16, 1921 in Saline County, Nebraska to Arthur and Ella (Ruzicka) Henry. He received his early education in Swanton, Nebraska, and he graduated from high school there in 1939. Hank attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska for one year. He then enlisted in the United States
Navy as the country prepared for war. Hank served on an I-ST (Landing Ship Tank) 210 in the
European Theatre landing in northern Africa, Italy, southern France and the beaches of Normandy After his discharge from the Navy in December of 1945, Hank returned to Doane College to finish his education. He graduated in 1949 and began his career in Stella, Nebraska, teaching history and mathematics at the high school level.
During the summer of 1950, while taking a "fun" course in woodworking at Peru State Teachers
College he met Louise Eubank, a home economics teacher at the college. During their courtship Hank and Louise often drove to Omaha or Lincoln to the open-air ballrooms to dance to the big bands of the day. They married on August 24, 1951 at Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa. Hank enrolled at Iowa State University and pursued studies in Industrial Arts earning a second major. In the fall of 1952, Hank and Louise moved to Davenport, Iowa where Hank assumed a position as an Industrial Arts teacher at J. B. Young Junior High School. He later earned a Masters in Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Hank helped establish the Industrial Arts Department at the newly opened Wallace Wood Junior High School in 1972,where he remained until his retirement in 1983.
Hank remained in the US Naval Reserve until 1981. During this time he taught recruits at the local reserve base, worked on Naval curriculum development and went on active duty during the summer months. He retired as a Senior Chief Engineman after 32 years of military service.
Hank was a member of the Davenport Area Retired School Personnel Association, National Education Association, Iowa LST Association, Fleet Reserve Association and the Varsity Dinner Dance Club.
During his early retirement, Hank delivered Meals on Wheels and worked with the Eager Beavers at St. John's United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 66 years. He also put his woodworking and fix-it talents to use in a home remodel. Hank enjoyed traveling with Louise, family and friends. He was an avid reader of westerns and there was not a Louis L'Amour or Zane Grey title at the Bettendorf Library that he had not read.
Surviving Hank are his daughters Alison Henry, Zurich, Switzerland and Lisa Henry Vasquez (J),
Bettendorf. Hank took pleasure in spending time with his sister, Mari-Ann Pesek (Mike), Swanton, Nebraska and his nephews Michael and Mitchell, niece Michele and their families. He is also survived and blessed by many nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law from Louise's family. Hank was preceded in death by Louise and his parents. He joins them now in eternal peace.
