Marjorie was born on October 18, 1935 in Alma, Georgia, to Samuel and Angel Beatrice Carter. Marjorie graduated from Bacon County High School in Alma in 1954 and attended Business College in Savannah, Georgia.
Marjorie met Joe Gound in Savannah at a YWCA “social” while Joe was serving in the USAF. After being united in marriage in 1955 in Savannah, Marjorie and Joe moved to Lawrence, Kansas so Joe could finish college. After graduation they moved to Chicago, Illinois followed by Des Plaines, Illinois to raise their family. They retired to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas in 1993 then moved to Bettendorf in 2007 to be closer to family.
Marjorie’s first job was a soda jerk in Alma. She held secretarial jobs, taking time to be a stay at home mom until her children were in school. She worked at an organ company in Lawrence, a law office, Denoyer-Gepphert Map Company, a newspaper, Federated Foods and retired from Sybron, a dental equipment company.
Marjorie enjoyed bridge, crafts, needlework, sewing and baking. She completed many beautiful needlework projects. She stayed active with her children’s activities and bridge clubs. During their time in Hot Springs Village she volunteered for the local theater. Marjorie and Joe traveled extensively including trips to all 50 states, several cruises to Norway, Italy, Panama Canal, Caribbean, and Hawaii. She visited her many family members in Georgia at least twice yearly. Once in Bettendorf, she continued with a bridge group at the Bettendorf Community Center and volunteered at the American Cancer Society Discover Shop ironing clothing in preparation to sell.
Those left to cherish Marjorie’s memory are daughter, Kimberlee (Joe) Turner, Bettendorf; son, Mitchell (Dana) Gound, Suwanee, Georgia; grandchildren: Christine (David) Perkins, Ellen (Zachary) Rasmussen, Richard Turner, Daria (husband, Avery Doig) Gound, Devin (Fiancé, Brent Goodwin) Gound, and Max Gound; great-grandchildren, Jayne and Ryan Perkins and Joe Rasmussen; sister, Mary Faye Phillips; sister-in-law, Juanita Carter; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in 2017, parents, and brothers, Joe Carter and Jesse Thomas.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of The Fountains Senior Living for their compassionate care of Marjorie and her family over the last 3 ¾ years and to St. Croix Hospice for excellent end of life care.
