Marlene was born in Davenport, Iowa on January 2, 1937, the daughter of Rolla and Helen (Bruhn) Chalupa and was a lifelong resident of Davenport. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1955 and worked as secretary in the guidance department at Davenport High School and then Central High School for close to 30 years.
She married David Lee Long in Davenport on September 22, 1956. They enjoyed many happy years together raising their daughters, traveling, and spending time with their grandchildren, family and friends. They were known for their holiday celebrations and hosting many get-togethers.
Marlene was an active, social person who was loyal to her family and many friends, supporting whatever activities they were involved in. She was a dedicated Girl Scout leader, a West High band parent, a tireless member of the Davenport High School Class of 55 reunion committee, a member of a card club which met monthly for 50+ years, a lifelong member of Faith United Church of Christ, an officer of the NALC Branch 506 Auxiliary, and volunteer at John Glenn and Jackson Elementary schools where her grandchildren attended. She was quick to make new friends, always remembered names and special occasions, and was the first one to get involved when something needed to get done.
She is survived by daughters Karen Farley (Mark), Janell Alger; grandchildren Michael Farley (Buffy), Riley Farley, and Katey Alger; a sister-in-law, Joyce Long; nieces, nephews, and many cousins and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband David, and son-in-law Kenny Alger.
