Mary Ann was born on November 15, 1933 in Muscatine, IA to parents Maude (Doan) and John McCaffrey. She graduated from Muscatine High School and went on to graduate from Presbyterian Hospital of Chicago. Mary Ann proudly took on the role of caregiver throughout her life. Early in her career, she worked at Mercy Hospital (now, Genesis East) as an RN in both the ICU and ER. Later, she became the head nurse at Good Samaritan Society.
On July 26, 1954, Mary Ann married Quentin Maxwell in Muscatine, IA and the pair went on to enjoy over 37 years together. They raised three children and saw much of the world together before Quentin passed in 1991.
Mary Ann embodied many roles throughout her life and didn’t seem to believe in the concept of spare time. She truly lived life without taking a moment for granted. Mary Ann was a member of BlackHawk Hiking Club, CASI, and was a lifelong Quaker. She was a Tai Chi student, enjoyed gardening, playing piano, quilting, travelling, and camping. Later in life, she took on the title of “grandma of the neighborhood” and could be spotted anywhere by the signature big hats she wore.
Those left to honor her memory include her children; Wade Maxwell, Lisa (Roland) Waddell; granddaughter raised as her own child; Christa (Mike) Emler; great-granddaughter, Miriah Emler, and two great-great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Quinn Kulp.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Quentin; one beloved son, Quinn Maxwell, and her siblings, Ruth Lawson and Dr. Donald McCaffrey.
