Mary was born on May 12, 1942 in Hayfield, MN to parents Lillian (Elias) and Ervin Blake. She graduated from Hayfield High School and went on to join the workforce. On August 12, 1961, Mary joined Richard Higgins in married union at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Their love for each other grew as they welcomed three children. While the kids were young, Mary worked part time at the Heinz lab. She later joined her husband as owner of United Pest Control and retired in 1999. She was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport.
For Mary, the love she had for her family was endless. She was overjoyed with the welcoming of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of her favorite moments were spent sailing the seas on cruises with family. She found pleasure in the simple moments of life, such as listening to gospel or country music. Mary had a contagious laughter and cheerful spirit that is already missed.
Mary’s love continues in many, including her husband of 63 years, Richard Higgins; 3 children, Darla (Ronnie) DeVriendt of Stamping Ground, KY, Dawn (Michael) Hamerlinck of Bettendorf, IA, Dean (Susan) Higgins of Coral Springs, FL; 5 grandchildren, Ryan (Sarah) DeVriendt, Jena (Josh) Neuhaus, Kaylan Moore, Daniel (Jenn) Higgins, Michael Higgins, and 5 great-grandchildren, Colton, Canaan, Braxton, Becklyn, and Brielle.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Larry, and a beloved grandson, Travis DeVriendt.
