

Mary R. Kalshoven died on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Crest Health Care Center, Davenport, IA. A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017 in the Koning Chapel at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at Ridgecrest Village. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Cape Vincent, NY.Mary Elizabeth Rienbeck was born in Watertown, New York, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Vary) Rienbeck of Cape Vincent, New York. She attended Syracuse University and graduated from Marycrest College in 1975.She was a Business Office Supervisor for the New York Telephone Company in Watertown, New York, before her marriage to the Rev. Thomas N. Kalshoven in 1955. After graduating from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, she was a teacher in the Davenport Schools for fifteen years, thirteen of them as a reading teacher in the Title I program at Jefferson School.Mary Kalshoven was a member and ordained elder of First Presbyterian Church in Davenport and served in the Stephen Ministry. After retirement Mary tutored adults in reading. She helped one young adult learn to read so she could become the first member in her family to vote in a national election. During Mary’s residence in Ridgecrest Village she served as the chair of the Resident Advocate Committee for the state of Iowa at Crest Health Center for 3 years. She later served in the Volunteer Service League, the Resident Council, and the recycling program. Survivors include her children: David Kalshoven and Jane Grimstad of Middleton, WI, Karen and Wayne Hean of Davenport, and Peter and Isabelle Kalshoven of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren: Kathryn (Joel) Hasenmiller, James Hean, William Hean, Daniel Kalshoven, Jonathan Kalshoven, Emily Kalshoven, and Ashley Earley; and great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Hasenmiller and Thomas Hasenmiller.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Thomas, on December 5, 2016; a sister, Ella; and brothers, Donald, Frederick, and Kenneth Rienbeck. Memorials may be directed to Churches United, the Ridgecrest Foundation, or First Presbyterian Church in Davenport.
