

Melvin Dean Harper, 86, of Davenport, passed away on July 26, 2025, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Bettendorf. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa, on Friday, August 1, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to service. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Born on March 6, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa, to parents Melvin and Valeria Harper. He graduated from Davenport High School, and went on to help run the family dry cleaning business for several years. He started his career at the Oscar Meyer plant as a supervisor, before retiring in 1995. After that, he worked at both the Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits Department and with his grandson at the lawn care business he started.
When Melvin wasn’t working, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, golfing, entertaining family and friends. Christmas was one of his favorite times to entertain, going all out to make it joyful, memorable, and fun. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, singing in the choir, and heading the Property Committee.
Melvin’s marriage to Bette Irene Slater gave them two sons, Brad and Todd Harper. In 1987, he married Jan Jurgens, with whom he spent many happy years.
Melvin is survived by his brother, Gary (Diana) Harper; his sons, Brad (Becky) Harper and Todd Harper; his grandchildren, Jacob (Nicole) Harper, Maggie Harper, and Sammie Harper; his great-grandchildren, Lucas Harper and Nolan Harper; several nieces and nephews; and the numerous friends he made along the way.
