Phillip A. Trissel, 84, of Bettendorf passed away Wednesday, October 24th, 2018 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf surrounded by his loving family. Memorial visitation will be held from 4-7:00 pm Sunday, October 28th at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport with services at the church 10:30 am Monday, October 29th. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting his family with arrangements.
Phil was born in 1934 in Davenport, Iowa to Nevin A. and Margaret Trissel. He married Janet L. Fidlar in 1958 in Davenport and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 7 of this year. Phil graduated from Davenport High School and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where he was a varsity basketball player and member of the ROTC. He entered the Air Force, was trained as a pilot and served as a radar interceptor controller. He spent a year in Japan where he was the operations officer of a strategic radar base. After completing his service, he joined Trissel and Graham Insurance that was founded by his father in 1934. Phil became principal owner of the agency which was later named Trissel Graham and Toole where he worked for 52 years.
Phil served as president of the Davenport Independent Insurance Association, president of Davenport Kiwanis Club and Commodore of Lindsey Park Yacht Club. He was on the board of directors of Northwest Bank and Trust Company, Davenport Osteopathic Hospital, Vera French Community Mental Health Center, Boy Scouts of America, United Way and St. Paul Lutheran Church. Phil also proudly served on the Bettendorf Civil Service Committee and was a member of the Quad City Rotary, Gyro Club and Davenport Country Club.
Phil enjoyed many years of boating on the Mississippi and had a passion for finding wood boats to restore. He was well known for his ability to bring old boats back to their original condition and he enjoyed helping his friends with their projects. He loved snow skiing with family and friends. He was the top ski racer in Iowa for aged 70 and older and spent a season as a ski instructor in Keystone Colorado. Phil enjoyed golf with his wife Janet and a foursome of friends fondly nicknamed the Kangaroo Cripples.
Survivors include his wife Janet; son John (Sandra) Trissel of Canton, Georgia; daughter Karen (Scott) White of Bettendorf, IA; grandchildren Alyse (Dan) Schmidt, Amelia Pohlmann and Alexander Pohlmann; great-grandsons Henry and Robert Schmidt; and sister Sue (George) Seaberg of Riverdale, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother James Trissel.
