Richard C. Atkinson

Richard was born August 3, 1941, in Chicago Illinois, to Charles Joseph and Angela Antoinette (Dvorak). He grew up in Cedar Rapids Iowa, graduating from George Washington High School in June of 1959. He later married the love of his life Genevieve Frances (Gennie) Clearman on September 8, 1963, in Friends Church, Buffalo, Iowa. While married, he attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a BS degree in Civil Engineering in 1964.

In July of 1964 He began working for the Rock Island District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Rock Island Illinois, retiring in January 1998 as Chief, Structural Section, Engineering Division.

Left to cherish Richard’s memory is his wife, Gennie; children, Deborah (Randall) Pontious, Pamela (John) Childers, and Joseph (Chasidy Bennett) Atkinson; grandchildren; Courtney (Tim) Moore, Katie (Cathy) Pontious-Vanhxay, Samuel (Tegan) Childers; and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Wayne Henry Atkinson, and sister Barbara A. Watts-Corfits.

Richard was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed golf, genealogy, and spending time with his friends and family. He will be remembered for his honesty, work ethic, compassion, loyalty, sense of humor and tendency to laugh until he cried.

Richard’s wishes were to have a private family memorial. No funeral services will be taking place at this time. Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Scott County.
