Richard “Dick” Lynn Hartsock, 84, died on September 28, 2026 at UnityPoint Trinity Rock Island after a short illness. His funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, October 1, at Bethel Assembly of God, 3535 38th Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201. Visitation will start an hour and a half prior to his service, at 10:00 am. Memorials may be left to Empower House, a non-profit that supports survivors of brain injuries, or First Baptist Church of East Moline.
Dick was born on August 5, 1942 in Elwood, Indiana to parents Walter and Frieda Hartsock. After serving in the Navy for 8 years, he worked as a computer programmer. He lived in Pelham, Alabama for 42 years.
Dick served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. After the war, he lived the American Dream. He had a wife and two kids. He was married for over 50 years until his wife, Pauline Hartsock, lost her fight with cancer, and Dick had to figure out how to live life without her. More than two years after his wife’s death, Dick would embark on the last adventure of his lifetime.
At the age of 78, Dick had a whirlwind romance with Lucille Perla. They met in December and were married by February. After the wedding, they went on a honeymoon that included swimming with dolphins. They spent the next few years traveling and running away from Illinois winters. Even when Dick needed oxygen 100% of the time, they managed a trip to the Philippines.
When they weren’t traveling they were remodeling, and they converted their 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house into a 1 bedroom 3 bathroom house with a pool. When leaving their house became difficult, they became masters at ordering Door Dash and buying groceries on-line. They renewed their vows when they celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary, not thinking it might be their last. Dick leaves behind a legacy of living big and loving hard. He will be missed by all those who got to play a part in his big adventure.
He is survived by his wife Lucille Hartsock, his children Eric (Pam) Hartsock and Andrea (Jimmy) Carter, and his grandkids Matthew and Amanda.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Pauline, and Patty, their daughter that received her angel wings in childhood.
