Dick was born in 1943 in Davenport, Iowa and raised in Donahue, Iowa where he attended a 1-room schoolhouse through the 8th grade. He was proud to be a member of the first 4-year class of North Scott High School, graduating in 1962.
A proud graduate of the University of Iowa in 1970, Dick was fond of saying he was a student for three terms – Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.
While attending Iowa, Dick met his wife of 51 years, Judith (Jewell) Karstens. Together they had two sons, Christopher and Joshua.
Upon graduation from Iowa, Dick worked alongside his father at Karstens Insurance Agency before joining AAA Motor Club of Iowa for a career in management spanning 33 years.
Dick faithfully cheered for the Iowa Hawkeyes and his Dallas Cowboys through good times and bad – mostly bad! His smile, wit, humor and one-liners made those around him at ease and always a laugh.
Born to Albert and Evelyn Karstens of Donahue, Iowa, Dick is survived by the family he loved; his wife Judith, his son Christopher and wife Heather currently of Sydney, Australia, his son Joshua and wife Vivian, and grandson Nicholas Karstens currently of San Diego, California.
