Dick was born on August 13, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa, to Fred and Martha Helen (Schumacher) Lewis. He graduated from Davenport West High School in 1965 and married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Macomber, in February 1968 after returning home from Vietnam.
Dick spent his childhood in the Green Acres neighborhood of Davenport, where he enjoyed playing baseball, participating in Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts, and riding his bike with his beloved dog, Duke. He began working at a young age delivering newspapers, an experience that helped shape the strong work ethic that defined him throughout his life.
Before being drafted into the United States Army, Dick began his career at Alcoa, now Arconic. Within his first month of employment, he was called to serve his country in Vietnam. During his military service, he completed an extended tour as a crew chief and door gunner on a Huey helicopter. Following his honorable service, Dick returned to Alcoa, where he built a successful 36-year career. He worked his way from Millwright Laborer to Foreman before retiring in 2001.
Dick was a doting husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, snarky attitude, and the countless memories he created with those he loved.
In 2023, Dick was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, a disease that gradually took away much of the quality of life he treasured. Throughout his journey, his family remained steadfast in their love and commitment, ensuring he was surrounded by care, comfort, and dignity every step of the way.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Cherie; his children, Carrie (Junior) Rodriguez, Courtney Lewis (Todd Geiger), and Ryan Lewis (Sydney Kiwala); and his cherished grandchildren, Mason and Emmitt Rodriguez of Davenport, Rylan and Emma Lewis of Davenport, and Jayna Lewis-Geiger of Lynn Center. He is also survived by his loving sisters, DiAnna Seams, Connie Rissler (Niel), and Mary Richardson (Mike), who were blessed to share in his life, along with nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Martha Helen Lewis, and his infant brother, Fred Lewis Jr.
In accordance with Dick's wishes, no visitation or memorial service will be held. The family will have a celebration of life at a later date. Memorials may be made to your local animal shelter (adopt a dog if you can), Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, or the Dementia Society of America.
His family extends our heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for the exceptional care and support provided to Dick and his loved ones during his final days. Also, to the staff in the ER at MercyOne in Davenport for their kindness and care.
Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind. And are feeling the love and prayers from our loved ones through this difficult time.
"Those we love do not go away; they walk beside us every day."
