

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday June 12, 2026, in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. He will be laid to rest in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com.
Richard was born on February 22, 1935, the son of Warren & Theresa (Boock) Moritz in Davenport, IA. On July 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Sara Lynn Jones at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Davenport, IA.
Richard lived his entire life in Davenport and took great pride in service to his community. He was a member of the Scott County Sheriff's Office for several years and was the leader of the Sheriff’s Posse. He worked with the Boy Scouts Explorer program while a deputy and later as a Scout Master when his own sons became scouts. He was proud to become a member of the NAACP beginning in the 1960’s.
He was always a hard worker beginning as a young boy delivering newspapers, setting pins in the bowling alley, making donuts at a bakery and working on his uncle’s farm. As an adult he worked as a gas station attendant and as a warehouse worker at Consolidated Foods. Richard & his brother Dale owned and operated D & D Conoco filling station and in 1965 he began his career at the sheriff’s department. After leaving the sheriff’s department, he founded Bi-State Legal & Court Services. In his retirement years, he acted as doorman and security at The Col Ballroom.
Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid protector of our lands and waterways. He was a founding member of Lupton’s Duck Club. His greatest loves were his wife, children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. His happiest times were when family & friends gathered at his home. These times often ended as a dance party in the kitchen.
Richard was a Hawkeye sports fan, a believer in democracy and supporter of Westend small businesses.
Those left to continue his legacy include his wife Sara, his children Sue Sprott, Timothy (Pam) Moritz, Mary (Bob) Blazejewski, Stephen (Liz) Moritz, Carol (Michelle Magyar) Moritz, Matthew (Sarahjayne Snow) Moritz and his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth Nussman, brothers Ken and Dale, daughter Christine Schulz, son Thomas, and great granddaughter Kylen Miehe.
