Rick was born on December 19, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Jerry and Mary McAninch. He grew up in Montezuma, Iowa, where he graduated from Montezuma High School.
Rick retired from the City of Davenport in 2018 after 30 years of dedicated service in the Street Department. Throughout his career, he was known for his exceptional work ethic and willingness to tackle any challenge. Before joining the City of Davenport, Rick held a variety of jobs that helped him develop an impressive range of skills and abilities. There wasn’t much Rick couldn’t build, fix, or figure out. Whether working on his own projects or helping someone else, he took pride in a job well done. His knowledge, determination, and ability to solve just about any problem were admired by everyone who knew him.
Above all, Rick was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family deeply, and nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his eight grandchildren. To them, he was affectionately known as “Peepa,” a name that will forever hold a special place in their hearts. Rick was always willing to lend a helping hand, often working tirelessly on projects for family and friends. His love was shown not only through his words, but through the countless things he did for those he cared about.
Rick’s favorite holiday was the Fourth of July. Each year, you could find him outside tending to not one, not two, but three grills running at once, making sure everyone was well-fed and enjoying time together. Those celebrations, filled with family, food, and laughter, will remain cherished memories for years to come.
Rick married the love of his life, Cindy Guinn, on November 3, 1984, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, and treasured family traditions. Whether they were remodeling a room, taking their grandchildren to amusement parks, or hosting family ice cream socials, Rick and Cindy made the most of their years together. Their greatest joy was the life and family they built side by side.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of nearly 42 years, Cindy; his three children, Jessica (Jason) Mortvedt of Ames, Iowa, Felicia (Mike) Haakenson of Davenport, Iowa, and Josh (Brianna) McAninch of Davenport, Iowa; and his eight beloved grandchildren, Julia Mortvedt, Janae Mortvedt, Kaitlyn Haakenson, Benjamin Haakenson, Adaline McAninch, Parker McAninch, Luella McAninch, and Lillianna McAninch. He is also survived by his father, Jerry (Carol) McAninch; and his brothers, Chris (Janet) McAninch and Craig (Linda) McAninch; father-in-law Robert Guinn; several nieces and nephews.
Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Mary McAninch; his mother-in-law, Judith Guinn; his grandmother, Thelma McAninch; and his grandfather, Ernest McAninch.
Rick will be remembered for his hardworking hands, generous heart, remarkable ability to fix just about anything, and unwavering love for his family. The many things he built and repaired will serve as lasting reminders of a man who gave so much of himself to others. But his greatest legacy will always be the family he loved and the memories they made together.
