Robert (“Bob”) William Whelove, Jr., 80, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Newcomb Presbyterian Church in Davenport with a visitation beginning at 10:00 AM and a luncheon following the service. He will be laid to rest in the Rock Island National Cemetery.
Bob was born on September 22, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri to Robert and Adelle (Kullmar) Whelove. Bob grew up in nearby Kirkwood, Missouri, where he developed a passion for fishing and playing tennis, a sport he would go on to play at the University of Missouri at Rolla. While at Rolla, Bob earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and went on to earn his master’s degree in chemical engineering from Louisiana State University. He worked as a chemical engineer until his retirement in 2004 from the Rock Island Arsenal. Bob also proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant and later Captain while in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Most special to Bob was his family and faith. Bob met his loving wife of 49 years, Janet (Feldt) Whelove, at a St. Louis disco. Together, Bob and Janet raised their daughter in Davenport and enjoyed attending her activities and watching the St. Louis Cardinals and Missouri Tigers. Bob was an active member at Newcomb Presbyterian where he served as an elder and a deacon. Most recently, Bob was proud to become a grandpa.
Those left to cherish Bob’s memory are his wife, Janet; daughter, Amy (Whelove) Wright and husband Gordon Wright; grandson, Robbie Wright; brother, Rick Whelove; and sister-in-law, Kathleen (Feldt) Von Minden; uncle and friend to many. Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents; parent-in-laws, Arthur and Hilda Feldt; sister-in-law, Barb Brazos; and brother-in-law, Pete Von Minden.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
