Roosevelt “King” Evans, Jr. was born in Fannin, Mississippi on June 4th, 1941. He was the sixth of seven children and fourth son born to the union of JaRuthie Evans (Johnson) and Roosevelt Evans. The family later moved to Jackson, Mississippi during his formative years where he received his education.
Roosevelt was a free spirit who loved to travel. As a young adult, Roosevelt moved from Jackson to Houston, Texas where he worked for many years on the Houston docks as a longshoreman with his brother Thurman (aka Shug). He moved back to Mississippi for a short time where he worked as an automotive mechanic with his brother James Charles (aka J.C.). He later moved to Chicago, Illinois to join his sisters (Ruth and Helen) and one of his brothers (William aka Lank) during which time he continued to work as an automotive mechanic. During his later years, he moved to Davenport, Iowa where he continued his work as an automotive mechanic with his friend Frank Lewis. During his time in Davenport he met and married Croemonia Evans. He and former wife Croemonia moved to Texas for a short time before returning to Davenport where he remained until his passing. Roosevelt’s last and greatest wish expressed to both family and friends was to return to Houston, Texas where he flourished as a young man.
Roosevelt is predeceased by his mother and father, two sisters (Ruth and Helen) and three brothers (James Charles, Thurman, and William). He is survived by one brother, Marshall R. Evans who lives in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife Glenda.
In addition to his beloved brother, Marshall, he is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Marshall’s daughters Michelle Durr (Brian) of Bowie, Maryland, Marla Evans (Akil) of New York City, Dr. Melanie Evans of Houston, Texas, and Mia Saracual (Rafael) of Nashville, Tennessee; Ruth’s children David Haynes, Kelvin Haynes, Debra Burt (Larry) all of Chicago, and Kenneth Haynes (Trina) of San Francisco; Helen’s children Laverne Reynolds of Chicago and Vincent “Ishmael” Haynes (Waahidah) of Houston, Texas; James Charles’ widow Henrietta Evans and his children Jamie Evans, Elsa Evans, and Samuel Evans all of Jackson, Mississippi. He is also survived by his first cousin, Margaret Wells of Los Angeles, California as well as a host of other cousins, great nieces, and great nephews.
Roosevelt enriched the lives of many people with his generous and caring nature including his close and beloved friends Linda Foster, Willie (Red) Page, Jr., Frank Lewis, Theresa Adams-Hardy.
Throughout his life Roosevelt was a spiritual person and transitioned from his earthly vessel on Sunday, May 17, 2020.
