Sang was born on March 11, 1941, in Kyongnam-do, South Korea, to her father, the late Kee Oup Son, and her mother, the late Wee Mong Son. The youngest of four children, Sang’s early life was marked by hardship, resilience, and strength. After losing her mother shortly after her birth, she was raised in Miryang, South Korea, against the backdrop of the Korean War. Her father, an officer for the Seoul Security Department, fled communism and led Sang and their family south to safety; instilling in her a fierce perseverance and courage that guided her throughout her lifetime.
In every sense, Sang and her husband embodied the American success story. On March 3, 1965 she married Dorman Miller in Seoul, Korea where he was an active military service member. Arriving in the United States with practically nothing, Sang poured her heart into building a bright future grounded in sacrifice and opportunity. She brought a strong work ethic to everything she did. Sang dedicated 28 years of her career to Northrop Grumman, working tirelessly in shipping and logistics before enjoying a well-earned retirement.
Sang’s personality was vibrant and impossible to overlook; she was ambitious, spirited, larger than life, and proud of her Korean heritage. A true "Tiger Mom" in the most loving way, she always wanted the absolute best for those around her, pushing her family to reach for their highest potential. She was an exceptional cook whose homemade Korean dishes brought family and friends together for delicious meals around her table. Sang found joy in pan fishing every chance she got, gardening, taking long walks, playing cards and staying active at her local YMCA.
Sang’s faith was a guiding part of her life. A devout Christian, she was baptized at Pleasant View Baptist Church and was an active member of the Korean Church in the Quad Cities. Sang’s legacy of hard work, unconditional love, faith, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
Sang is survived by her devoted husband, Dorman Miller; her children, David Miller and Susan (Matt) Mayer; and her sister, In Su Son. She enjoyed being a grandmother to her cherished grandchildren: Nicole (Luke) Dorwart, Rachel (Cyrus) Elahi, Madeline Mayer, Joshua Mayer, and step grandchildren Austin, Blaine and Grant. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jong Su Son, and her sister, Ahn Ho Son.
