Shirley was born in 1935, the only child of Walter and Hilda Hoefer. She was very proud to have grown up in a small farmhouse on the "Buffalo Road" without indoor heat or plumbing, but she had many dogs, cousins and two terrific parents to keep her warm and loved. Shirley was very proud to have cared for her Grandma Dorothea. It gave her a lifelong sense of devotion to care of family.
Shirley graduated from Davenport High in 1954 and promptly began a 40 year career with the Davenport School District, starting at JB Young and working in many administrative roles.
Shirley married Bob "Buzzy" Reed in 1958 and together they raised two sons, Christopher and Todd. She could be stern, but also made sure each of her boys always had a couple dollars in their pocket for a comic book and a Slurpee, or some penny candy at Martin's Grocery.
In her younger years before two knee replacements, Shirley was a world class roller skater who knew all the steps. She loved to do crossword puzzles with her son Todd, watch tennis and root for Roger Federer, though she never played a game herself. She never met a dog she did not love. Her backyard swing and a good mystery book were her favorite place to spend an afternoon - feeding the creatures of the field, her birds, her bunnies and her squirrels.
Per her wishes, Shirley was cremated and will be inurned at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery next to her husband. A memorial and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 4, 2021 at Weerts Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
