Toby P. Dickens, 70, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A committal service for Toby will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2024 at Rock Island National Cemetery. For those who wish to attend, please meet at the visitor's parking lot at the Moline Entrance 15 minutes prior to the service time. In his memory, contributions may be made to Pregnancy Resources or Veterans Outreach.
Toby was born on September 15, 1953 to parents Margaret (Hyatt) and Ellis Dickens in Marshalltown, IA. The family moved to Davenport in 1957 and Toby graduated from Davenport West High School. He later attended University of Iowa and obtained his bachelor’s degree. He joined the United States Navy in 1972 and served in the Vietnam War. After his time in the Navy, he worked as an Insurance Adjustor and eventually retired in 2015.
Toby married Mary Taylor on February 11, 1989 in Bettendorf, Iowa. Together, they enjoyed countless adventures in 34 years of marriage. Just some of those adventures included hiking four times to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and enjoying the sights of North America. Along the way, Toby shared the passion of photography with Mary, and they photographed classic Americana towns and sites.
Family was incredibly dear to Toby, he loved spending time with the grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Toby’s contagious laughter, adventurous spirit, and unique personality will not be forgotten.
Loved ones left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mary; stepsons, Dean (Cindy), James (Amy); grandchildren, Catherine, Jacob, Marley, Jaelyn; brother, Jake (Belinda) Dickens; brother and sister-in-laws, Aprile, Debbie (Tom), Mike (Diana), Sheila, Jeff (Sally), Cinde, Gary (Pattie); nieces and nephews; Steven (Kristina), Ky (Kaisa), Ariel, and great-nieces and great-nephews, Alliyah, Harlow, Augie, Hyatt, Theo.
Toby was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Richard.
