Vernon started out as a self-employed barber for 18 years and then worked as a delivery driver for Swift Foods for 9 years. He eventually retired as a janitor from Davenport Community Schools in 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, dancing, and watching his children play sports when they were young. As a young man in the 60’s he played fast pitch softball for places such as Hob Nob Inn, Commodore Tap, and Parker’s Tap. He also played hard ball for the Rock Island Arsenal. His favorite respite was being at his cabin on the Mississippi review two miles west of Montpelier, IA. He was a member of the Elks (Davenport), NRA, and Ducks Unlimited.
Vernon was preceded in death by his son, Dusty Meier.
He is survived by his two daughters, Rhonda Miller (Rick) and Lana Smith (Chris), and 4 grandchildren, Melissa Brophy (Chris), Haley Walter (Clay), Aaron Meier, and Ethan Folts.
Per Vernon’s wishes, he will be cremated with no funeral service or burial. For the last 9 years he was in the care of Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa.
