Warren G. Porter, 92, of Davenport and resident of Naples, FL since 2006, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 in Davenport. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Tuesday, May 20th in the Runge Mortuary Chapel, 838 E. Kimberly Rd., Davenport. Visitation will be from 1-2:30 pm Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial will follow in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 26. Memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church in Davenport or St. James Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. Online condolences may be expressed at Mr. Porter was born March 20, 1922 to Guy and Florence (Schaeb) Porter. He graduated from Davenport High School and then attended Drake University in Des Moines until he was called to serve his country. Warren was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II in the Pacific as Tech. Sgt. with the Headquarters and Service Company, 618 Ord. Bttln., earning several awards including a Bronze Star. After leaving the service, he began his Government career with HQ, AMCCOM at Rock Island Arsenal. On November 9, 1947 he married Helen Frederick in Davenport. She preceded him in death in 1979. He later married June Stichter-Johnson on May 16, 1980. Warren was an outstanding athlete during high school and college. He was a member of the All-State football and baseball teams during high school and continued with football at Drake University. He continued his love of sports in Davenport, playing fast pitch softball in the East Davenport league at Lindsay Park. He was also an avid bowler for many years with several leagues in the Quad Cities. Other memberships included St. Mark Lutheran Church, Davenport American Legion Post 26, VFW Post 1928, Davenport Moose Lodge 28, and the Davenport Evening Lions Club where he was a Past President. A big priority in Warren’s life was spending time with his grandchildren and he was a faithful participant in all their activities. Mr. Porter retired from HQ, AMCCOM in 1978 as a Program Budget Analyst and Director of Plans, Policies and Procedures. Survivors include his wife June; daughters Linda (John) Norris and Sandy (Bob) Froehlich; grandchildren Kyle (Amanda) Norris and Lindsey Norris; great grandchildren Maxwell Norris and Emmett Norris; stepsons Mark (Monty) Yegge and Dennis Vetter; stepdaughter Nancy (Ron) Greenlee; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. In addition to his first wife Helen, he was preceded in death by his brother Edward and his parents.
