

Davenport – Wayne R. Harmsen, 58, of Davenport passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Manor Care, Davenport, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at Runge Mortuary, Davenport, Iowa, on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at 1:00 PM, with visitation being held two hours prior to funeral services. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Online tributes and condolences may be made at www.therungemortuary.com.Wayne was born in Davenport on August 25, 1954, the son of Elwood (Woody) Harmsen and Marlene (Puck) Harmsen. Wayne graduated from Davenport West High School in 1973 and began working as a carpenter for Herculean Homes. He later worked for Liquid Grow in Durant, Iowa, and as a farm hand for several area dairy farmers. Wayne was raised on a farm south of Walcott, Iowa and loved every aspect of the farm life, from doing chores to showing livestock at the fair as a member of the Blue Grass 4-H Club. Bailing hay and milking cows always were Wayne’s favorite past times on the farm. However, the love for the farm life did take a back seat to the Chicago Cubs. Wayne was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and passed away peacefully with his Chicago Cubs blanket around him. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Handicapped Development Center, or your favorite charity Wayne is survived by his mother, Marlene Harmsen, brothers David (Monica) Harmsen and James (Lou Ann) Harmsen. Sisters: Mary (Tom) Burmeister and Rita (Ron) Fick. 14 nieces and nephews and two great nephews.Wayne was preceded in death by his father Elwood (Woody) Harmsen, his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles. The family would like to thank the staff of Manor Care East Locust location for their excellent care of Wayne during his stay.
