

Private services for Wayne R. Johnson, 90, of Bettendorf were held Saturday, December 4th, 2010 at Runge Mortuary in Davenport. Interment was in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations in honor of Wayne’s memory may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Scott County Humane Society or a church of the donor’s choice. Wayne was born January 20, 1920 in Rock Island to Arthur and Nona Johnson. He married Lois M. Denger on July 17, 1943 in Davenport. Wayne was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army.
Wayne grew up in Rock Island and fished the rivers with his brothers in their homemade boat. He was in the first group of employees hired by Alcoa, Davenport Works and retired as General Accounting Supervisor in 1985 after 38 years. He was responsible for the successful running of the first major computer in the Quad City area known as the Univac 1 Computer.
In 2005, he was inducted into the Rock Island High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He was a founding member of the Edgewood Baptist Church and later attended Pleasant View Baptist Church. He was an avid collector or rocks, antiques and anything made from aluminum. He recently donated his collection of rocks to the LeClaire Museum. In earlier years Wayne recruited donations from businesses for the United Way. He was a former president of the Quad Cities chapter of the National Association of Accountants and former chairman of the Scott County Compensation Board.
Wayne is survived by his wife Lois; children Cynda Strong, Springfield, IL, Molly Holst, LeClaire, and Richard Johnson, Long Grove; nine grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy.
