William “Will” Isham Moon III was born August 10, 1961, in Kansas City, Missouri, to William I. Moon Jr. and Carolyn (Cusac) Moon. At four years old, Will moved to Walcott, Iowa, when his parents took over the Iowa 80 Truckstop. He loved scouting and the outdoors and earned the honor of Eagle Scout. He attended Walcott School and graduated from Davenport West High in 1979. Will loved sports and competing and played baseball, football, basketball, and field events in track. He still holds the shot-put record at Walcott School. At West, he played on the 1977 Iowa State High School Football Championship team and threw the shot and discus on the track team. Will was inducted into the West High School Hall of Fame.
Will developed his love of Iowa 80 by following his dad around when he was just a little kid, pulling weeds, mowing grass, and later working on the fuel islands and in the tire shop all through college to save up to buy a used pickup truck.
He also devoted his life to his wife and kids. Will made Bettendorf his home and raised three children there: Billy, Ben and Sarah, where he led a boy scout troop for many years and passed on his love of scouting, among other things. His kids remember many camping and road trips that they embarked on with him throughout the years. There was never a problem too small or question too silly that his kids presented that he could not solve.
Will was an avid reader and particularly loved business, history and historical novels. He was an early adopter of books on tape and spent many hours commuting or traveling for business and listening to books. Over his career, he logged thousands of miles searching America’s interstates for sites for potential truck washes, truck stops, and CAT Scales. He shared his love of reading and road trips with his wife, Renee, and they most recently explored Revolutionary War sites all over the east coast in honor of our nation’s 250th anniversary.
The University of Iowa would remain a touchpoint and passion for him throughout his life. Iowa was central in bringing him together with his wife, Renee, who was also an Iowa undergraduate and dental school alumni. They bonded over their love of the Hawkeyes, had their first date at the Airliner in Iowa City, and married in 2014. They competed for the unofficial title of greatest and loudest Hawkeye fan. Will gave freely of his time, business outreach, and resources to endow the head football coach chair, create football student scholarships, fund the Swarm and the University Children’s Hospital. He and Renee attended 100’s of games, and supported all sports, enjoying wins and losses, Big Ten tournaments, Bowl games, and March Madness for both women’s and men’s basketball.
Will and Renee blended their families well, and Will made moving father of the bride toasts for both of Renee’s daughters, Miriam Maikon Lemke and Sarah Maikon Redlinger, as well as Sarah Moon Daine’s. He loved being a grandpa and even allowed his granddaughters to put bows in his hair to entertain them.
Will was a member of the Iowa YPO Gold, Davenport Quarterback Club past president, National Association of Truck Stop Operators Association, American Truck Historical Society and past treasurer of Boy Scouts of America-IAILL. He served on several boards, notably Russell Construction, Sinclair Tractor and Quad City Bank and Trust. He was the President of CAT Scale Company and President of Iowa 80 Group, which owns and operates truck washes and truck stops, including the World’s Largest Truckstop in Walcott, Iowa.
Will Moon was a noble man. A man who gave much of his time, talent and treasure to all and asked for very little. With a towering stature came a quiet authority that filled any room he was in. He made haste slowly in decisions. He loved others through acts of service and sage wisdom.
Will is survived by his wife, Renee Breckenridge Moon, children Billy (Kaitlyn) Moon, Bettendorf, IA, Benjamin (Elizabeth) Moon, Bettendorf, IA, Sarah (Connor) Daine, Afton, MN, Miriam (Jeremy) Lemke, Davenport, IA, Sarah (Adam) Redlinger, Sioux Falls, SD, grandchildren Bella Lemke and Cora Daine, sisters Delia (David) Moon Meier and Carolyn (Richard Seehuus) Moon and nieces Nell Meier, Lee Meier, Lana (Nick Timm) Meier, Alexandra Seehuus, and Abby Seehuus.
He is preceded by his parents Bill and Carolyn Moon.
