A lifelong resident of Annapolis, Barbara was educated in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools System. Throughout her life, she held a number of respected roles within the community, including positions at Johnny’s Sweet Shop, Bates Junior High, Central Special, and in service to Captain Stone. She also made local history as the first African American soda jerk on Main Street—a pioneering milestone that reflected her quiet strength and trailblazing spirit.
Barbara had incredible talents in the kitchen and her curry chicken brought comfort to many. An exceptional baker, she delighted generations of family and friends with her homemade baked goods—cookies, cakes, and homemade rolls. She also found joy in sewing, crocheting, and solving crossword puzzles, but nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with her grandchildren and hosting her cherished annual family cookout. These joyful celebrations of love and togetherness remain among her family’s most treasured memories.
In 1978, Barbara married the love of her life, Charles Johnson. Their union was a beautiful testament to commitment and devotion. She remained faithfully by his side, caring for him with love and grace until his passing.
Barbara is survived by her brother, Roland (Sharon) Offer; sons, Barry (Joyce) Gray, Jeffrey Gray, Albert (Lenett) Johnson, and Derrick (LaTrice) Parker; daughter-in-law, Stacey Abdul-Khaliq; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gail Offer and Susan Offer; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who adored her dearly.
With deep sorrow, the family also shares that Barbara’s sister, Linda Offer, passed away just 48 hours later.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Beverly and Solomon Offer; her husband, Charles Johnson; her sons, Glen Coates and Willie Abdul-Khaliq; and her brothers, Solomon, Thomas, Jackie, Wayne, Robert, and Barry Offer.
Barbara’s life was a beacon of love, faith, and resilience. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A burial for Barbara will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 West Central Ave, Davidsonville, Maryland 21035.
