Lucille lived most of her life in Shady Side. She also spent some years in Washington, D.C. where she attended the Garnet Patterson School prior to being employed in the area. In 1964, she married the late Ellsworth L. Brown. From this union, they had one daughter, Laureen Brown. Lucille also had one daughter from a previous marriage, Diana Nick Jones. Lucille had three granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Lucille was employed as a domestic worker for most of her younger years, assisting her parents in the care of her younger siblings. After marrying Ellsworth, she assisted him in the operation of his clam business.
Lucille was an active member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church until her health began to decline. She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Women, served on the Hospitality Committee, and was also a Communion Steward.
Lucille’s family, especially her siblings, meant the world to her. Her family would often gather at her home on Sundays, have breakfast, talk and laugh for hours, and sometimes have dinner too! Her sisters would come to her house on weekdays to watch the “stories” and have a cup of coffee. Lucille loved for her house to be the gathering place for family and friends, all were welcome, and you could always count on her to feed you. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, watching MSNBC and Jimmy Swaggart.
Lucille peacefully transitioned this earthly life on April 29, 2023 at Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Crownsville, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellsworth Brown; father and mother, John and Sarah Matthews; brothers: William, Thomas, Ellis, Calvin, Preston and Alexander; sisters: Jean and Thelma; and son-in-law, Ernest Jones.
