Richard James Fischer

Richard was born on July 31, 1943, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Dr. James and Dorothea Fischer. When he was three, the family moved to the Bay Point neighborhood of Miami, and South Florida was home from then on. He attended Florida State University, where he played on the tennis team and earned his bachelor’s degree.

Richard spent his career in public service. He worked 30 years in the Human Resources Department of Miami-Dade County, then served 10 years as Personnel Director for the City of Sunrise.

He met his wife, Janice, on a blind date. It turned out to be the best setup of his life. They were married for 49 years, just shy of their 50th anniversary.

Richard was happiest with his family around him. He was deeply proud of his sons and his grandchildren, and his favorite days were spent with them, especially out on the boat. He was a big sports enthusiast, especially during football season.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Janice; his sons, Cliff, Ryan (Meghan), and Colby; his grandchildren, Alexandria, Landon, and Leighana; his sister, Joan (Robert) Branstetter; his brother, Ronald (Lyn) Fischer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 901 NE 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
