CLAREY, D.O., Alison Ann, age 63, of Dayton, Ohio and Naples, Fl., passed away peacefully, while surrounded by her family and close friends, Friday, October 28, 2011 at her Dayton home. Dr. Clarey was an osteopathic surgeon, educator, leader and volunteer. Dr. Clarey did her Internship at Grandvew Hospital. She continued on to become the first female resident at Grandview. At the time there were very few female surgeons nationwide, and in 1977 she became the first female surgeon in Dayton. Her many awards and achievements include serving as Chief of Staff at Grandview and Southview, president of the Dayton District Academy, president of the Ohio Osteopathic Association, president of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and an Ohio delegate to the American Osteopathic Association. She was a member of the Grandview Foundation Board of Trustees, and only recently stepped down as Program Director of the General Surgery Residency program at Grandview Hospital. A firm believer in giving back, Dr. Clarey was a compassionate volunteer who dedicated her time and services to helping people both locally and abroad. She provided free surgical care to indigent patients. Each year, she traveled to third-world countries, Sierra Leone, Africa, Madagascar, Romania, and Guatemala, to do volunteer surgery. She served as Chair Person for the local United Way, was named Dayton’s YWCA Woman of the Year and one of Dayton Daily News’ Top Ten Women of the Year in 2006. She was an avid pilot, Dr. Clarey belonged to the prestigious Ninety-Nines, an international women pilots association founded by Amelia Earhart and once flew in the "Powder Puff Derby". Dr. Clarey is survived by her dear friend, Regina Linz, brothers, Michael and Robert Clarey (Edith), half-brother Russell (Lorraine), half-sisters Evelyn Roberts and Lucy Gransden, nieces Tammy McInerney and Michelle Clarey, nephew Todd Clarey and a host of other nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. I have been in Kentucky since 2001 and just found out about Dr Clareys death a few weeks ago. My dad was dying of cancer in 1974 and I remember her as the feisty small lady with the ponytail who would come in to check on my dad as a surgical resident working with Dr Elliott. Then fast forward about 7 years and I am an RN working in the OR at Grandview and there she was again! I worked with her often throughout the next years...circulated her first gastric bypass at Southview...and then I became the patient, having one myself under her tender loving care. I am so sorry Reggie. I will remember Dr Clarey for many reasons. God truly has taken one of the best of us.
