A Washington Twp. resident since 1950, she was an active part of Centerville community in the early days as it grew especially with PTA, CCL and scouting.
Born September 21st, 1926 to Mae and Charles Gile in the farming community of Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the sixth of seven siblings. Two events convened to alter her young life in 1929. The first being the sudden death of her father, the second being the stock market crash which led to the Great Depression both of were factors in the selling of the family farm. Though her family was affected by these events, they endured with determination often seen in that Great Generation to eventually become successful.
She left for Dayton, Ohio in the closing years of the war to be employed at WPAFB. There she met her future husband Mel after his return from England where he served with the 8th Air Force in a B-17 Squadron. Together they built one of the first houses in the Woodbourne Section of Washington Twp.
After Mel’s (Lt. Colonel Retired) passing in 1985 she became an active member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Kettering. Betty was renowned for her sloppy joes which alway sold out and helped raise money for the church. Her further involvement lead to her serving as a Deacon. She would remark from time to time that Fairmont Church gave her purpose as well as many new and cherished friends.
Betty is survived by her children, David (Barbi) Brown of Washington Twp., Bruce Brown of Columbus, Ohio, and Melanie (Michael), Weiner of Cincinnati, Ohio, and as well as her grandchildren Lauren Allen, Griffin, Nicholas and Alec Weiner. Also two great grandchildren Blair and Avery Allen. Also many nieces and nephews in and around Marshalltown, Iowa as well as her 102 year old, last surviving sibling Dorothy Coughlin of Colorado.
Mom was not only an excellent homemaker and gardener, she retired from mowing with her John Deere tractor at age 95, she was the center of the family. Her holiday and birthday dinners were always very special occasions. She loved spending time with the grandkids and was an inspiration to all of us. Thanks mom.
The family would like to thank Ashley, Amanda, Summertime, Katie, Tracey, Millie, Julie and Jennifer of Hospice of Dayton for their loving care and concern for mom and her family during her final days as well as the staff at Fairmont Memory Care.
