
Betty Lew Flory, age 82 of Beavercreek, passed away Monday, December 23, 2013 at Kettering Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born May 19, 1931 in Kasson, West Virginia to Henry O. Poling and Beatrice Coffman Poling. She was educated at Bridgewater College in Virginia, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1952. She married Byron M. Flory that year and moved to Chicago to join him where he was a student at Bethany Theological Seminary. She was a classroom and substitute teacher in Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, and Ohio while her husband was Pastor of three congregations in Maryland and the Beavercreek, OH and Waynesboro, VA Churches of the Brethren; she was a much-loved Pastor’s wife, deacon, and gardener. Betty Lew was preceded in death by her beloved husband in 2007; she was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Poling. She is survived by two children: daughter, Kristin Flory (Andreas Zumach) of Geneva, Switzerland and son Kevin Flory of Alice Springs, Australia. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Poling (Pauline) of WV, sister Catherine (Donald) of WV, sister Henrietta Ball (David) of SC, and sisters-in-law Susan Poling, Marie Flory, Mirna Wolfe, and Nancy Flory as well as many more dear friends and relatives. A memorial celebration of Betty Lew’s life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, 800 E. David Rd., Kettering, OH 45429. Friends can call on the family from 10 AM until the time of the service and following the service on Saturday. Contributions may be made to either Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund or Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond, IN in Betty Lew’s memory.
