Betty graduated from Hardin Simmons University with a teaching degree in May 1950 and was married to Travis Hendrick three months later. Before her first child was born she also earned her Master's in Education from West Texas State A&M.
Travis worked for Shell Oil so they made several moves. Betty lived in 6 different states during her lifetime. They had been married for 59 years before Travis passed away in 2009. Travis and Betty had three children. She is survived by her sons Kenneth (Judy) Hendrick of Fairborn, Ohio; and John Douglas Hendrick of Lincoln, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen (Kevin) Shinn. Betty is also survived by 5 grandchildren - Kenneth's sons, William (Brigid) Hendrick of Clemmons, NC; Andrew (Ritu) Hendrick of Greenville, NC; and Travis (Megan) Hendrick of Beavercreek, OH; and Karen's children, Luke Shinn of Lincoln, NE; and Claire (Connor) Brand of Lincoln, NE. She was also blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, William and Brigid's daughter, Maeve and son, Liam; Andrew and Ritu's daughter, Amaris; and Travis and Megan's daughter, Kendall and son, Colton.
Betty taught elementary school, junior high, and high school but her absolute favorite job was school librarian for Highland High School in Bakersfield, CA. She enjoyed helping students discover books. She was also the first generation in her family to use computers (to order and inventory books). She took an early retirement in 1989 so she could spend more time with Travis, their children and grandchildren, and for traveling. Betty loved her family, church, reading, travel, reading, taking walks, her pets and reading. She was a pioneer in her own way who supported women becoming leaders in society, in their churches, and in their professions. She enjoyed a good conversation but also had a listening ear. She also enjoyed playing cards and games and could get a little competitive. Betty LOVE Hendrick was a giving person who touched many others throughout her lifetime. She will be missed by family and friends.
There will be a celebration of Betty's life at Tobias Funeral home, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Beavercreek OH from 2-4 P.M. on Saturday, December 13th for family and friends.
Betty loved helping people and she loved trees. In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to give to a charity she loved.
