We sadly announce the passing of our beloved mother, Catharine (Katie) Hughes who left this earth for Heaven on June 2, 2026. She was born on December 24, 1930, in Waverly, Ohio to Arthur and Avanelle Wittkugle.
She and her husband, Oris (Peanut) Hughes, married on June 26, 1948. They raised three wonderful children, Christina, Steve and Don, in Dayton and Beavercreek, Ohio. They welcomed our neighbor boy, Gary Zembo, into the family as well. He grew up with us. We enjoyed family vacations camping, boating and learning to water ski, hunting, fishing, going to the Smokey Mountains and visiting relatives in Waverly. Family was everything to Mom. She was a wonderful, loving, and fun mother. It has been our greatest blessing to love and be loved by her.
Mom was talented and creative. She made many kinds of crafts, sewed and crocheted. She loved to bake and decorate cakes for special occasions. She baked pies for her neighbors. She enjoyed playing cards with her sister, Mary, as well as other family members. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, working puzzles and sitting on the porch swing in her gazebo. Most of all she enjoyed being with family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Oris (Peanut), as well as her parents, her sisters Becky and Marian and her brothers, Chris, Bob and Joe. She leaves to cherish her memory, her sister, Mary Hughes as well as her children, Christina (Tom) Barker, Steve (Joyce) Hughes, Don (Kathy) Hughes; grandchildren, Lisa (Rex) Baker, Thomas (Stephanie) Barker, Amy Barker, Joshua Hughes, Elizabeth (Zach) Helling, Stefanie (Lonnie) Wilkey, Tanya (Derek) Stargel, Katrina (Tyler) Starline; great grandchildren, Thomas (Aerika) Baker, Michael (Julia) Baker, Christian Barker, Taylor and Ally Blair, Carmen and Addi Wilkey, Raylan Acton and Jack Stargel; and great-great grandchildren, Brielle and Blair Baker. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and her special friends and neighbors.
Mom was able to stay in her home until she went to Hospice on May 21, 2026 due to the special care given by her daughter, Christina, son, Steve, daughter in law, Joyce, granddaughter, Elizabeth, as well as her wonderful caregiver, Joyce Worrell who loved and cared for Mom like family. We appreciated her so much. A special thank you to the staff at Hospice and the wonderful, kind and gentle care they provided our Mother.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Dayton.
