

David Clair Herting, age 97, passed away on January 1, 2026 at The Trinity Community in Beavercreek, OH. David was born on September 29, 1928 in Pottstown, PA., to Ruth Davidheiser Herting and G. Claire Herting. Spending his entire childhood in Pennsylvania, he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Chemistry and then from the University of Wisconsin with a PhD in Biochemistry. On August 30, 1952, he married the love of his life, Martha Elizabeth Schaeffer. He spent 32 years in the Rochester, NY area before being transferred to Tennessee in 1986 by Eastman Kodak Company. During his career, he published about 60 articles and patents.
Preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, a daughter, Catherine Louise, and by sisters Carolyn Smith and Doris Clo, he will be greatly missed by his four sons, David A. Herting (Carolyn), Kenneth E. Herting (Hope), Philip M. Herting (Connie), and Carl A. Herting (Judy) as well as 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
David loved his church and served as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years, president of the congregation, choir member and in various ministries. He volunteered with the former Boy Scouts Of America for about 40 years, Carter County (TN) Literacy, Habitat For Humanity and Family Promise. He also assisted Tax Counseling for the Elderly (an AARP program) for 32 years. Above all, he dwells in the hearts of his family as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date and will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 212 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in David's name be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church, or Lutheran World Relief.
