

COMPTON, DONALD M., 95, died October 5, 2017 a resident of The Vista on the Bethany Lutheran Village Campus in Centerville, where he had resided for the past several years. Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Martha (Marty), son Dwight, in whose memory a Scholarship Fund was established by Marty and Don at Ohio University, and brothers Cron and William. He is survived by son, Brooks (Ruth) of Centerville, daughter Constance Anne Compton (Stephen Howe) of New Castle, Colorado, grandsons Christopher (Jamie) and Brett, and great grandchildren, Callie, Cate and Kit. Don was born in Dayton and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1940. Both he and Marty were loyal and generous alumnus of Ohio University, where in 1985 Don received the Medal of Merit award for his service to Ohio University. Don also served on the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University Foundation Board for over 10 years. Don saw military service during World War II in the European theater as an officer in the Navy aboard an LCI and participated in Operation Dragoon in 1944. After his military service, he attended the College of Law at the University of Cincinnati which led to the practice of law in the Dayton area for more than 53 years with a small group of partners and friends, whom he very much enjoyed. Don was one of the first council members for the City of Kettering, during its founding years and was a proud resident of Kettering, where he and Marty resided for over 60 years. He was a long time member of Christ United Methodist Church, Kettering Rotary Club, Virginia Hollinger Memorial Tennis Club, the Dayton Lawyers Club and Walnut Grove Country Club. Don loved music and was an accomplished violinist. He enjoyed all sports, especially tennis and golf, which he played into his late 80s. Don was a great traveler, and with Marty, traveled to all of the continents, with Siesta Key as their special place where they enjoyed many days of warmth, sun and relaxation. Don lived a full life his family is so proud of.
The family will receive friends at TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-FAR HILLS CHAPEL, 5471 Far Hills Ave. at Rahn Rd. Dayton, OH 45429, Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral service 11 am Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the funeral home. The family suggests that any memorial gifts be made to the Dwight N.
