After high school, she attended Indiana University and Valparaiso University where she received her degree in primary education. She taught elementary school in the Chesterton Indiana area for about ten years. Doris loved teaching and often tutored children who did not attend school. Her nieces and nephews remember Aunt Dorie for her games of “military” and “teacher” as she would quite often give them “tests”, as she called them, to keep them busy. While living in Indiana, she met her former husband Robert who worked as a construction engineer. They moved to Dayton, OH when Robert took a job at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Doris became a homemaker after they moved to Ohio, she loved her home and her gardens, which won several awards within the community. Doris loved to read, especially her bible, as she had a very strong faith. Even though she lived far from her family, she stayed in close contact with a few phone calls a week. She was quite the conversationalist. She enjoyed being around people and helping others. Doris spent her last five years within the community at Stoney Ridge, where you could find her enjoying the activities and entertaining others. The staff there said she was inspiring, uplifting others, with her good spirit or giving someone a compliment that would brighten their day. Doris will be laid to rest within the family cemetery plot in Chesterton, Indiana.
