Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, daughter of Percy and Lura Higby Woolwine, and sister to Elmer, Doris graduated from Grant Highschool in 1932. She supported her parents through the Great Depression doing office work and later obtained a secretarial degree before marrying Michel "Mike" Stuhlsatz in 1938.
She and Mike lived in various states when he returned from service in Word War II before settling in New Hampshire where they raised their family in the Monadnock Region.
A "working mother" before it was common, Doris was secretary to former NH Governor Walter S. Peterson and ended her career with 25 years of service as secretary to the Academic Dean of Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH, retiring in 1981.
Following the death of her first husband in 1976, Doris met and married Robert Weaver of New Port Richey, FL, where she lived until 2003, when she relocated to East Providence, RI to be closer to family.
An avid reader, Doris enjoyed the Book Club at the East Providence Senior Center as well as a one in Trotwood, Ohio. Though widely acknowledged to be a terrible cook, she relished a nice lunch on Federal Hill and never declined a glass of champagne or a party invitation. Doris loved to try new things and engage others, never shying away from any topic, including politics and religion.
Her interest in politics was a constant throughout her life, significant considering that she was born before women achieved the right to vote. She was as thrilled to have attended a campaign rally for then-candidate Obama as she was to anticipate the possibility of our first female president.
Often striking up conversation with strangers, no one was safe from her pithy advice, but with her guileless manner and infectious laugh, she could never offend.
In her later years, Doris divided her time between her family in RI and the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dallas Moore, in Trotwood, Ohio. She was an active member of the United Church of Christ of Trotwood, and audited political science courses at Sinclair Community College until a week before her death.
Besides Donna and Dallas and their daughter, Jessica, she is survived by her granddaughters Valerie Rutstein of NYC, Lia Stuhlsatz and her husband, Robert Caron, of Rumford, RI, and her grandson David Stuhlsatz and his wife Elizabeth of Quincy, MA, as well as her daughter-in-law Marika Stuhlsatz of Roxbury, NH, her great grandchildren Eva, Peter, Benjamin, Isabel and Jayden, and her beloved Siamese, Foxy. She also leaves the loving memory of her son, Peter Stuhlsatz, and her daughter, Rene Angeline, who pre-deceased her.
In lieu of a formal memorial, her family asks that you engage in a random act of kindness in honor of her generous heart.
