Edith Katrina “Katy” Yingst was born on Valentine’s Day in 1943 in Greenville, Ohio. Born to well educated parents, she was raised in a loving family that valued learning and directness. She went on to graduate from Wilmington College with a teaching qualification.
She taught science and math at Fairbrook Elementary in Beavercreek for many years. Katy was close to her Fairbrook family of teachers until the end of her life. She loved her students and loved trying to challenge them to think.
Katy was preceded in death by her parents (Arbor Logan “Al” and Edith) and four siblings: Harry, Harvey (Austin), Faith, and Virginia (Ginny). Although Katy never married or had children of her own, she was significant part of the lives of her sister Faith’s two boys. She endured many health struggles over the years, including brain tumors, which had a profound impact on her life. Through the years she showed exceptional resilience with a sense of humor, unbridled determination, and a will to live.
Always brave, she recovered many of her abilities and was able to return to her own home for several years, even after retirement. In her later life she was a resident of several area nursing homes where she made many friends, becoming well liked by both staff and residents. Katy was well known for her forthright personality, her sense of humor, and strong opinions throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by many.
