October 11, 1926 - April 10, 2023
Dayton, OH – Harold Rieck passed away peacefully at Southview Hospital, with Mary, his wife of 40 years, by his side.
Harold was born October 11, 1926 in Dayton, Ohio. He was the only child of Harold Robert Rieck Sr. and Marie Gard Rieck. Harold was a graduate of Northridge High School and attended Sinclair College. He loved all sports, including football, baseball, tennis, racquetball, and especially golf. Harold was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish – in both fresh and salt water. He was a skilled captain and enjoyed many hours on the water with Mary and his son Steve in the R&R (Ree and Rieck). Harold continued to stay active and play golf into his late 80s.
Harold was the fourth-generation president and owner of Rieck, a mechanical contractor founded by his great-grandfather Herman Rieck in the 1890s. Harold loved his Rieck “family” of more than 200 employees, and knew their families, as well. Harold was a “roll up his sleeves” kind of leader and worked right alongside the guys – never asking them to do anything he wasn’t willing to do himself. One of the Rieck traditions was an annual employee cookout and Christmas party, and for the last 40 years, an annual Trout Club Outing for customers.
Harold was recognized with many awards, including the Dayton Chamber’s Man of the Year Community and Leadership award in 2012, and induction into the Dayton Business Hall of Fame in its inaugural class in 2017. He also received numerous industry accolades. Harold was a special friend and mentor to his business partners; Doug Mayse, Doug Walker, Mike Stemen and Steven Fabrigar, who will carry forward the Rieck tradition of excellence.
Harold had a heart of gold and cared deeply for others. He shared his time and resources with countless nonprofits, including United Rehabilitation Services, Dayton History, the Grandview Foundation, and Humane Society. He loved Dayton, Ohio and along with his wife Mary, was committed to making this community a better place.
Harold is survived by his wife, Mary, son Steven Nonnenman (Angela Palitto, DO) and granddaughters Kailey Nonnenman and Kayla Weller, and grandson AJ Hess. Harold was preceded in death by granddaughter Chanel “Nellie” Nonnenman.
A gathering of family and friends for a viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, April 19 from 4-8 pm at the Carillon Park Kettering Family Education Center, 1000 Carillon Blvd., Dayton, Ohio 45409. A celebration of Harold's life will be held at 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Rieck Children's Center at United Rehabilitation Services. https://ursdayton.org/donate/ Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared for the Rieck family at www.tobiasfuneralhome.com.
