Helen (LoMaglio) Hischak died on September 25, 2023 at the age of 96. Helen was an amazingly resilient woman. She was a devout Catholic, a loving wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a proud Italian, a kind and compassionate woman and a very loyal friend to many. She lived long, she lived well but her stories and her life lessons will live on in each of us.
Helen (LoMaglio) Hischak was born to Italian immigrants in Rochester, NY on July 19, 1927. She was the youngest of 8 surviving children and was named after the Queen of Italy, Elena. She was affectionately called Dolly as a child and it's been a nickname some call her still. As a teen during WWII , she translated the war news for her parents as they only spoke Italian and 3 of her brothers were serving overseas. In the late 40's Helen worked for Kodak in the dark room. In 1949 she met Tom Hischak when they talked local baseball at a bowling alley where they both played in leagues. Her easy to talk to manner won the shy Tom over and they married in June 24, 1950 and resided in Rochester, NY. They had 5 children then Tom's job with GM took him to Dayton, Ohio in 1966 where they lived the rest of their lives amongst many friends obtained mostly through their involvement in St. Helen's Catholic Parish.
Helen was friendly and outgoing with a teasing sense of humor. In her early years in Dayton she volunteered as a first aid nurse in the elementary school and was very active in the parish Altar Rosary Society, even serving as president for a term. Her volunteerism at St. Helen's was significant throughout her life as it was her way of serving God. Her kindness and compassion for others made her an example to all who knew her.
Helen was able to travel extensively with church friends, siblings and, if she could talk him into it, her husband. After Tom's retirement they were kept young by actively helping to raise their 4 small granddaughters. They relished their couple of months of warm weather and sunshine in Pompano Beach, Florida for many winters. After Tom's passing in 2012, Helen stayed in the family home a couple of years before moving into Ten Wilmington Place in Dayton where she resided until her death.
Her family is grateful for her long, fulfilling life but find solace in her once again being with her beloved husband, family and many friends who passed before her.
Helen is survived by her children; Thomas (Cathy) Hischak, Ronald Hischak, Christine (Stan) Lucas, Gregory (Rachel Solomon) Hischak, Angela (Jonathan) Bleemer.
Her grandchildren; Mark Hischak, Karen (Jake) Billingsley, Thea (Jack) Mulichak, Sophie (Kevin) Lubwama, Andrea Hischak, Aretha (Chris) Mitchell, Ben Shedlin, Julia Shedlin, Ava Hischak, Meredith Bleemer, Charlotte Bleemer.
Great-Grandchildren;
