

ENGEL, Herman, age 93 of Centerville, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, July22, 2018. Herman was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and became a 2nd Lt. He served as a navigator on a B24 and flew 22 missions before being shot down and becoming a POW in Germany during WWII. Upon return to the U.S., he graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute as an Aeronautical Engineer and worked in Parachute Systems Development for 46 years at WPAFB. After retirement, he became a volunteer at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. He was born May 15, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by daughters Barbara Engel of Columbus, OH and Kathy Laurnen (Mark) of Evergreen, CO, son Bill and daughter-in-law Lisa Engel of Dayton, sons Chris Engel and Jim Engel of Dayton; grandchildren Jason (Dipali), Siobhan (Ivan), Dylan and Caitlin; great-grandchildren Aidan, Mackenzie, Addison, Nikhil, Jae and Ishani; special friend Michelle Giefer and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Nancy his wife of 56 years and his sister Elsie. The family would like to express special thanks to the Staff of Brighton Gardens Memory Care Unit, especially to Heather, Brian, Cindy and Marsha, and to Ohio Hospice of Dayton, especially Sarah and Tiffany, for the loving and attentive care given to him during the last few years.
